Work experience

Even the brightest young people will meet new challenges as they enter the work force. Only through direct experience can young people develop the wide-ranging skills of the workplace. The best place to encourage development of the requisite skills has to be in a real place of work, and by providing young people with work experience you allow them to experience the realities and demands of adult working life for themselves.

Work experience is an opportunity for young people to experience working life while they are still at school and offers them  the chance to:
• Work alongside adults as part of a team
• Develop and practice a range of new skills
• Become more confident in their abilities
• Relate their school curriculum and qualifications to the workplace
• Make more informed decisions about their future

HOW DO YOU BENEFIT?

Work experience provides an opportunity to promote values and attitudes that serve the needs of business and the community - in the process, potential customers (teachers, students and parents) become more familiar with your organisation.

  • Work experience can also offer many other advantages
  • Working with young people presents opportunities for staff development
  • Young people on work experience are better prepared for the local job market
  • Discover new talent - many young people eventually follow a career in their host company
  • Students can provide business organisations and their employees with new perspectives on their work
  • It can raise the profile of career opportunities within your field and develop recruitment channels
  • Linking with education - via work experience - allows you to keep up to date with developments in education
